Clinical Study of Intussusception in Infants and Children



Abstract
A clinical review was done with 151 cases of intussusception treated at the department of surgery and the department of pediatrics in Korea General Hospital during the period of 9 years from Jul. 1972 to Jun. 1981, and the following results were obtained.
1) The most common age group was 6 to 12 months, and the male to female ratio was 2.3:1.
2) The etiology was idiopathic in 98%.
3) The clinical symptoms and signs were [abdominal pain or irritability (88%), vomiting (84.8%), abdominal mass (74.8%) and currant jelly stool (70.9%).
4) The leukocytosis was present in 67.5% of the cases.
5) The plain abdominal film revealed gaseous distention of the bowel (63.6%) and air-fluid level with severe obstruction sign (13,6%).
6) The anatomical types were ileacalic type (63.4%), ileocecal type (32.4%), enteric type (2.3%) and colocdlic type (1.4%).
7) The reduction by barium enema was performed in 131 cases, and was successful in 61.1%,
8) Surgical procedures were performed in 71 cases of which manual reduction was performed in 69%, bowel resection in 26.8%, and 4.2% of the cases were reduced sponta-neously under the general anesthesia.
9). The postoperative complication was occurred in 7%.
10) The overall recurrence rate was 3.9% and the overall mortality rate was 0.66%.
